The muffuletta sandwich is an iconic, Italian style sandwich that originated among the Italian immigrants of New Orleans dating back to 1906. It’s a large, hefty sandwich that has four very important components to it: Italian bread, an olive salad, provolone and assorted salumi.
The best part about a muffuletta is that you don’t need to take a trip to the “big easy” to enjoy this sandwich for Mardi Gras. You can easily create this in the comfort of your own home thanks to the convenience of our Mezzetta Italian Olive Salad and Sandwich Spread!
Our Italian Olive Salad and Sandwich Spread is colorful, bold and joyful and inspired by the olive salad found on this iconic sandwich. It’s made with rich olives, extra virgin olive oil, crisp white vinegar and seasonings, and will turn any meal into a flavorful masterpiece! Another thing to note: You don’t want to skimp on quality when making your muffuletta. Make sure you have the best bread you can find, a round, seeded loaf is traditional, along with fresh meats and cheese. For our muffuletta, we use a good salami, mortadella, a spicy capicollo and provolone cheese, all sliced thin, but feel free to use your favorite cuts.
We cut the large, round loaf of Italian bread in half crosswise, hollow out the insides (make sure you save to make breadcrumbs!) and layer all of the deliciousness inside before wrapping and placing in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Its as easy as that! Easy and flavorful!
